Introduction

What Are Bevel Gears?

Bevel gears are specialized gears designed for bevel gear power transmission between intersecting shafts, most commonly at a 90 degree angle. Their conical shape and umbrella like tooth design  enable smooth, efficient, and reliable torque transfer while changing the direction of rotational motion. Beveled gears are widely used in industrial machinery where accurate speed, torque, and directional control are essential.

At PTK, as a professional gear manufacturing company, we specialize in custom bevel gear manufacturing, producing high-precision straight and spiral bevel gears for a wide range of industrial applications. As an experienced gear manufacturer, we combine advanced machining technology, strict quality control, and engineering expertise to deliver durable, high-performance bevel gears that meet the demanding requirements of global OEMs.

FAQ

FAQs about Bevel Gear

What is the lead time for custom spiral bevel gears? Can you support urgent orders?

Standard lead time is 40–50 days for volume orders, depending on gear size, material, and heat treatment requirements. However, we offer an expedited service for urgent orders (e.g., prototype or replacement gears) — with our flexible production scheduling, we can deliver critical samples in 15–20 working days.

What is the expected service life of your spiral bevel gears under normal conditions?

Each gear batch is tested for:

  • Surface fatigue (pitting resistance)

  •  Bending fatigue (tooth root strength)

  • Wear resistance under cyclic loading

Actual service life depends on lubrication quality, load spectrum, and maintenance schedule. Our engineers can provide application-specific life estimates based on your operating data to help you plan maintenance intervals confidently.

What is the difference between spiral bevel gear and straight bevel gear?

A spiral bevel gear has curved teeth that provide smoother, quieter, and higher-load transmission, making it suitable for high-speed applications. In contrast, a straight bevel gear has straight teeth, offering simpler design, lower cost, and easier manufacturing, but with more noise and limited load capacity. The choice between spiral bevel gear vs straight bevel gear depends on torque requirements, operating speed, and noise control needs in the bevel gear system.

How do you ensure the tooth contact pattern and noise level are correct?

We run a 100% gear pair matching test on a specialized gear rolling tester before shipment. This verifies:

  • Contact pattern — precisely positioned (no edge contact) under light and load conditions

  • Backlash and mounting distance — within your specified tolerances

  • Noise/Vibration check — evaluated against application-specific NVH criteria

We supply matched gear sets to ensure smooth, quiet operation from the first installation. Every pair is measured and recorded, and the test report is included with your shipment.

Can PTK manufacture custom bevel gears?

Yes, PTK specializes in custom bevel gear manufacturing based on drawings, samples, or application requirements. We provide OEM gear solutions for both spiral bevel gear and straight bevel gear designs, supporting material selection, gear modeling, and engineering optimization to meet specific performance needs in industrial power transmission systems.

Do you offer prototyping services before mass production?

Yes, we strongly recommend pre-production samples. We provide:

5–10 piece prototype runs to validate form, fit, and function under your actual operating conditions

Quick turnaround — as fast as 15 working days

Sample cost policy: the sample fee is credited toward your first volume order — so you can test with confidence at zero net cost

We treat sampling as a partnership step, not a profit center. Our engineers will also provide DFM (Design for Manufacturing) feedback early to avoid future issues.

What documentation do you provide with each shipment?

Every batch is accompanied by a complete quality dossier covering:

  • Material Test Certificate — chemical composition, grain size, and mechanical properties

  • Tooth Geometry Report — generated on a Klingelnberg or Gleason gear measuring center (including tooth profile, lead, and pitch deviations)

  • Heat Treatment Record — case hardening depth curve, surface/core hardness, and metallographic inspection

  • Matching Test Report — contact pattern and backlash records for each gear pair

Optionally, we can provide retained samples and 3D scanning reports for high-end customers. Full traceability from steel mill to finished gear — you know exactly what you're getting.

What is your minimum order quantity?

For standard sizes, our MOQ is 50–100 pairs per gear specification. However:

We support trial orders as low as 5–10 pairs for new customers and prototype validation — with sample fees credited to future volume orders

For existing customers, we offer flexible mixed-batch ordering, allowing you to combine multiple gear sizes across different specifications to reach volume pricing thresholds with lower inventory risk

In other words: low entry barrier to start, scalable pricing as you grow.

Can you reverse-engineer existing bevel gears from samples or worn parts?

Yes — we specialize in reverse-engineering spiral bevel gears from physical samples or worn parts. Our process includes:

3D scanning of the existing part (or CMM probing for worn geometry with restoration compensation)

Gear geometry reconstruction (module, pressure angle, spiral angle, tooth depth, etc.)

Matching pinion calculation based on the required ratio and mounting distance

Contact pattern optimization to ensure proper tooth contact on your specific housing

We supply the gear set complete with a full dimensional report — no drawings needed to start production.
